Abstract

Nowadays, methods fo group discussion have been proposing as a classroom study in school education for development of self-learning and self-consideration. In particular, group discussion by computer network is expected to be an effective way to let them understand deeply about various problems, where versatile factors would mingle together complicatedly to think over for the solution, based on the development of information and communications technology. In this study, using a computerized group discussion system named ERFE(Eco-Reflective Discussion System for Environmental Education) which is applicable for school education, a trial study has been conducted for the schoolings in high school and graduate school of university, in order to validate the effectiveness of the utilization of ERDE for the both levels of schoolings. The ERDE has unique built-in mechanism to let learners consider a theme of discussion through the learner¡ï¡Çs group discussion wiht each other. To be concrete, the ERDE system can support the conduction of debate-type group discussion based on an argument model built-in ERDE system between the ¡ï¡Épro and contra¡ï¡É members of learners on a given theme such as ¡ï¡Éit shoul be like this, yes or no¡ï¡É. Therefore, it is versatile aspects, (ii)making logical reasoning based on objective data and warrant, and (iii)fostering global views on the theme of discussion including the tolerant attitude for different opinions. In the both experimental schoolings one conducted at a high school while the other at a graduate school of university, group discussions by using ERDE system were made by learners of the respective school on the theme ¡ï¡Énuclear power should be abolished, yes or no¡ï¡É. Based on the obtained protocols data of group discussion records and the questionnaries sheets given to the learners, the utilization of the ERDE was evaluated on its effectiveness and problems for school education, with the consideration of the appropriate application method of ERDE at the respective stage of the both schools.
