Abstract

Augmented Reality (AR) systems require accurate tracking of the user¡Çs viewpoint to display virtual information onto the appropriate place on his/her HMD. Recently hybrid-tracking techniques, which are combinations of plural tracking methods, have been developed to improve the performance of tracking. It is, however, difficult to choose appropriate tracking techniques and to design the appropriate combination. In this paper, a simulation-based design approach for hybrid tracking method has been proposed, and a prototype system has been developed. The proposed method employs models of typical tracking methods to simulate their sensor outputs and evaluates the tracking results of the hybrid tracking method by computer simulation. By using the prototype system, two hybrid-tracking methods have been evaluated to demonstrate the system and confirm its effectiveness.
