Abstract


In recent years, the number of international tourists had been increasing until 2019 and the use of digital signage has become widespread as a means of displaying multiple languages. In this paper, we propose a dual-language display method using oscillating animation for digital signage (bilingual oscillatory display) to solve the problem of conventional multilingual display method on digital signage. The proposed method improves the amount of information per area by inserting sentences written in one language between lines of the text written in another language and maintains readability with the effect of the law of common fate by providing two languages with independent animations that oscillate vertically and horizontally. In order to evaluate the readability of the proposed method, we measured the reading speed of Japanese speakers using the proposed method and the monolingual version of the text without animation (monolingual static display) and compared the results. Experimental results showed that the reading time in the bilingual oscillatory display was 3% longer than that in the monolingual static display while almost doubling the amount of information per area.
